During WWII Many whales were attacked by allied anti-submarine forces. This was due to whales misidentified as U-Boats. Whales and submarines have similar features when viewed from afar. Generally the the allied maritime patrol aircraft would attack the U-boat or whale with depth bombs. The depth bombs contained around 250 lbs of an explosive fill. This explosive fill would injure or kill any sea life within the area.
