In the spring of 1972, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched the massive Easter Offensive, opening one of the most intense phases of the war as the United States pursued peace talks in Paris and continued “Vietnamisation.” As American ground troops withdrew, South Vietnam faced its first major test as an increasingly independent fighting force, confronting a multi-front assault with waning U.S. support. ITN reporters and camera crews operating across the country documented key battlegrounds, including An Loc and the Central Highlands, capturing a conflict that had shifted into large-scale, conventional warfare and the mounting toll on soldiers and civilians. By the end of 1972, as fighting and diplomacy unfolded in parallel, attention turned to Paris where renewed negotiations appeared to bring the United States closer to an agreement to end its involvement in the war. A year that began in escalation moved, unevenly, toward an uncertain end.
