On 8 July 1965, the UK was plunged into mass hysteria as Ronnie Biggs, a central figure in the Great Train Robbery, escaped from Wandsworth Prison alongside three other inmates. In the aftermath of this national scandal, ITN looked further afield at maximum security prisons, like Stuttgart, which would gain notoriety across the 1970s for holding key members of the Red Army Faction.
