On 24 January 1965, ITN's Andrew Gardner presented a special bulletin announcing the death of Sir Winston Churchill. The news was presented over footage of Union Flags flying at half-mast across the capital, and Lord Moran, Churchill's personal physician, leaving the honoured statesman's home that morning. Gardner said the former prime minister died "in peace and without pain", before reading out the message of sympathy sent to Lady Clementine Churchill by Queen Elizabeth II, in which the monarch paid tribute to Churchill's "leadership, his vision, and his indomitable courage".
The 30-minute special news broadcast, presented by ITV newsreader Andrew Gardner, aired at 2.20pm on the day of Churchill's death. In an era when TV bulletins were typically much shorter, the extended length highlights the significance of the moment. Given the technological challenges of the time, recordings of live television from the 1960s are rare, making this discovery particularly valuable.
