On 1st June 1966, President Milton Obote abolished Uganda’s 1962 constitution and declared himself Executive President, consolidating power within the central government. This followed months of political tension and violence between Obote’s administration and the Kabaka of Buganda, King Frederick Mutesa II, over authority and regional autonomy. The move effectively ended Buganda’s special status, abolished traditional kingdoms, and marked a decisive shift towards centralised and authoritarian rule in post-independence Uganda.
