On 13 March 1996, in the Scottish town of Dunblane, 43‑year‑old local man Thomas Hamilton entered the gymnasium of the town’s only primary school as pupils were preparing for a P.E. lesson. Armed with four handguns, Hamilton killed 16 pupils and one teacher, Gwen Mayor, and injured 15 others before killing himself. Except for Mayor and three members of staff injured in the shooting, all of the victims were aged between five and six years old. The killings, which remain the deadliest mass shooting in British history, shocked the nation and led to landmark reforms of UK gun laws.
