On 24 August 1992, Sir David Attenborough spoke to Channel 4 News in defence of the BBC, as John Major’s Conservative government pursued reforms to public service broadcasting. Critics accused the BBC of bias or argued it distorted the advertising market, but Attenborough rejected those claims, stressing its vital role in providing trusted scientific and factual information. He argued that programmes of this kind could be made “in no other way” and were something the country should actively value. Attenborough turns 100 this week. He joined the BBC in 1952 and, over a broadcasting career spanning more than seventy years, became a defining voice of natural history and public service television worldwide.
