The t-shirt and ashes fire roll ignition has pretty much eluded me for 12 years. I’ve tried 100s of times and only succeeded twice, off camera.
Yesterday, I was trying it again and noticed how hot the fabric was getting. It actually seemed hot enough to ignite most other tinders. This morning I thought, why not add tinder, coal extender specifically, to the ash that's inside the fabric?
It worked. I used 8” x 1” strip of 100% cotton t-shirt, added 3/4” X 1 1/2” piece of Mullein, and 1/4 tsp on top of that. I gave it 35 forward rolls before rolling it back and forth 10 or more times. It ignited the small piece of Mullein which ignited the rest of the fabric.
