A slow orchestral piece that gradually builds over time, primarily focusing on the oboe.
This is now the fourth iteration of Simplicity of Sorrow. The first, made in 2011 was a recording onto a keyboard, featuring strings, an organ in the middle section, and a violin for the main melody. It was the fastest version, taking just over 5 minutes from start to finish.
In 2013, it was first uploaded to my old channel. This version was slower, taking almost six minutes to play in full. The violin remained the lead instrument, but the organ was ditched in favour of some synthesisers for the middle section and ending, as well as a harp to run along in the background.
A new version was uploaded to the old channel in 2015. This one was much slower, running for almost seven and a half minutes. The violin was scrapped, with the oboe taking its place, and the synthesiser stuff from 2013's version was dropped and replaced with a piano part. In this version, the organ was reinstated for the climax of the piece.
All these versions used generic string ensemble instruments for the string sections, however when it came to making this version, I realised I could split things up and arrange things properly, having double basses, cellos, violas, and 1st and 2nd violins on their own separate tracks. I felt this added a lot more depth to the piece, so much so that I didn't feel the organ and the harp were even needed, so both were left out. The double basses contribute pizzicato quarter notes, giving this version a more pronounced rhythm, and a clarinet makes a guest appearance in the middle section. This is also 6% faster than the 2015 version, coming in at just under seven minutes.
I'm really happy with how this one has turned out, and it seems promising for future orchestral pieces.
