A dark space ambient piece from MAP12 of the Doom megawad TNT: Revilution.
Shortly after the release of the Plutonia MIDI Pack in 2013, I received a message from Megamur, a playtester for the TNT2: Devilution project, requesting an atmospheric MIDI for one of the episode 2 maps.
He showed me screenshots of a dark abandoned space station, with glimpses of a sky dominated by a gigantic planet (which was either supposed to be the Hell planet or Jupiter, I forget.)
This was the first time I had been directly approached to make music, and I was still excited for the release of TNT2, so I naturally jumped at the opportunity. My initial intention had been to make something around 7 minutes long (which would have been my longest ever at that time), but after finishing the melodic part near the end I couldn't see a way to continue, so I left it there, but Megamur loved it as it was.
Taking TNT's setting in mind, I named it Ionian Isolation, and it was my first attempt at an all-out ambient track.
Unfortunately, February of 2014 saw nearly all of leading developer Kyka's work ejected from the project, including this map which he had co-designed. Within days, he started up TNT: Revilution, with Megamur and Ragnor 'Devalaous' Berntsen as his co-leaders. Megamur made a number of changes to the map for it to better fit the music, and it was decided this should set the general tone for the second episode of Revilution.
Later in development came dobu gabu maru and his modifications to the map, now named Transduction. He really knocked it out of the park, turning the random room copy-pasted from Evilution's Wormhole into an actual Wormhole concept itself, with a long suspenseful journey through an empty, brightly lit portion of the base, only to pass through a monolith leading to a Hellish copy of it.
When Revilution went to beta in early 2017, it was played on Doomworld's monthly Megawad Club, and the reviews for Transduction were pretty much universally positive, with many people praising the atmosphere of the map, dobu's wormhole segment, and this music track right here. For a lot of people, MAP12 seemed to be one of the highlight's of the set, and for me to see that my music, old as it is, to be a contributing factor to that was just a wonderful thing. I honestly had hoped for a more clear-cut improvement on the 2016 rendition on my old channel, but this was far more difficult than I anticipated. I hope I managed to do so, but just in case you preferred the old version, as always there's a link just below. Thanks for listening!
