This is the first of five of my second year uni assignments that I'll be posting here from now through to the end of June.
The task here was to write a 2-minute piece which had to have a feeling of tension, in the vein of the dramatic background music on reality TV shows, with Masterchef being specified on the brief.
I couldn't resist doing a heavy metal take on this idea, with guitars and bass backing up the strings, synths to contribute to the darker introduction and middle sections, as well as a key change for the ending. Music for these scenarios often feature pauses so I made sure to throw in a few of those too.
Since cooking shows like Masterchef are full of food art and deconstructed cheesecakes, I named the piece Deconstruction :) Of course, a picture of a cheesecake behind my instrument windows would look a bit dumb, so I chose something a bit more apocalyptic, because what I was basically trying to do with this track was create a hypothetical Masterchef backing track where overcooking the fish feels like the end of human civilisation, heh.
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, though I had a lot of last minute technical issues which drove me absolutely crazy. And speaking of technical issues, I had a bunch more whilst making this video - I didn't film the original recordings so these videos aren't "real," but of course I was taking care to be as close as possible to what I played originally. But on this one occasion, I'm using a webcam going straight into the computer, since my usual setup basically went to shit after I did the first two keyboard parts. It's too bad that my CPU isn't up to the task of recording tracks and filming simultaneously, because the webcam is better imo..
