This is the second of two pieces I wrote for the Plutonia MIDI Pack. This one, which appears on MAP31, contrasts heavily with Blood Rush, opting for a slower and more melancholic feel as opposed to the upbeat speediness of the latter.
Cry of Desperation really set the tone for a lot of my work over the years that followed, not least Darkest Hour, a spiritual successor that became my most viewed original composition on the old channel. It was in the spirit of Doom tracks like Sign of Evil and Legion of the Lost that I wanted to try and write something using just the VI-i chords (with vi thrown in to spice it up a bit), but changing the track through other means - building up to an intense crescendo from a soft beginning.
The very first version of this track didn't do this very well, spending about half of the track in the quiet stage at the start, and going straight to the fast part for the second half. It was with the suggestions by James Paddock and Lippeth that I ended up starting over from scratch to write a better version, which after some further tweaking became the one you hear in the pack.
In 2015, I released an HD version of the video, with new audio. The cleaner arrangement of the track I put together especially for the video resulted in perhaps one of the best results I ever got out of the soundfonts - I knew when I was starting this newest version it would be tough to top the 2015 rendition.
I stuck to the 2015 arrangement for this one, tougher than I was expecting to mix the track, but I'm happy with the result for sure. FINALLY, after four years, this track gets the massive snare drum sound I always wanted for it :)
