A short atmospheric piece for bass guitar with an electronic backing, composed for a recent uni assignment.
In short the assignment was about trying something new; so I went for a few things; the main one being that for a while I've really wanted to write music where the bass guitar is the focal point, with it being my main instrument and all. Harmonics, chords and tapping are used here to realise this, though I need to practice the latter a lot more in order to take this to the next logical step which is to lose the backing completely and have a literal bass solo. Maybe that's a goal for next year?
A few other things I threw in; irrational time signatures in the A section (4/12 and 5/12); I tried applying this with Blinko's Assignment a couple of years ago but I don't think that particular case really justified the use of irrational time sigs. Additionally, the B section is in 11/8 time, since I haven't used that one before.
The video here is made from two separate playthroughs filmed after the recording, each from a different angle; the actual audio is mostly one take; I'm not very consistent at tapping yet so the 11/8 part is more like a best of a few attempts; classic case of ideas above my skill level, whoops! To be honest I might start using this approach to the videos more often, it's what most people do as far as I know and it's just easier all-round as I can focus purely on the recording when I'm doing that without messing with cameras and stuff.
Anyway, thanks everyone for listening, and since this goes out on January 1st, I think a happy new year is in order! Here's hoping for brighter times ahead.
