Frozen Wilderness was originally written for the Doom megawad, TNT: Revilution. When Revilution was formed out of the split from TNT 2, I was quickly contacted by my friend Ragnor/Devalaous, one of the core members of the team about contributing to an original soundtrack for the WAD, on top of Ionian Isolation which I had written the previous year.
For much of its development, the super secret level (MAP32) of Revilution was to be an ice-themed map, and myself and Ragnor spent a lot of time discussing inspirations, which happened to include the snow themes from Terraria, and uh..something else, which was referenced in both videos.
I set out with the mission of writing something big, and after a few weeks, Frozen Wilderness was finished, coming in at over seven minutes.
Upon release of the Revilution beta, Frozen Wilderness was quite warmly received, though the map it appeared on Europa, was quite a different interpretation of the ice theme to what the original team had in mind.
The map itself, by project leader Jaws in Space, didn't fare so well. I guess you could say it got a mostly cold reception. Off the back of this, he pulled it from the project, and that killed the ice concept for good. For both me and Jaws, our biggest contributions to Revilution were now out of the project. R.I.P.
I knew remaking this song was going to be a tall order, but I didn't seriously expect for it to take nearly three weeks. Many of the issues surrounded the sounds of the synthesised instruments, which play a massive role in this piece. I had to tweak each one quite significantly until I was happy with them.
Amusingly, this made the usual problem of trying to play guitar seem quite insignificant. A simpler solo this time, I think it took me only six or seven attempts to record it. Finally I actually managed to play one of my guitar solos! :D
Apologies for the bass guitar video on this one, it's not great, but hey, there's not a lot going on there anyway :)
