Beneath the Stars was the first of four tracks I wrote for the Revolution! MIDI Pack, and the first of 17 written in 2016. As the first piece to follow Arctic Voyage, I think my writing style started to mature at this point, as well as coinciding with me starting to shift my life's focus to music instead of astrophysics.
For those reasons, Beneath the Stars - and its companion, "The Forgotten God", written just a week later - feels like another milestone, and so even though I finished this recording on the 6th of March and it got some air time on local radio on the 10th, I withheld this video until today, here's why:
March 14th is when I posted my first ever MIDI file on the Doomworld forums - and we know the story from there, I joined the Plutonia MIDI Pack and that first MIDI finally saw a proper release as A New Beginning, the first video uploaded to this channel. Although I had written some stuff like Simplicity of Sorrow before that, March 14 to me is the anniversary of me actually taking up music composition. The year was 2013, making it 5 years ago today, which is kinda crazy to think about.
It's been interesting and exciting to think about what the next five years hold (other than the fact that I'll be turning 26 in 2023). I'm not sure what kind of pace I can maintain with these recordings, but I fully expect to reach "The Village that Time Forgot" around mid-2019 - at that point every original from the old channel has been moved across and we can finally start looking forward to newer stuff appearing here like Shadows, The Library of Nightmares, and Panophobia - a 14-part suite which I finally finished in February after slowly plugging away at it since May 2017.
There's also the Planetarium, which I think could be finished in summer 2019, but I can't promise anything there, I will say though that in addition to the two demos (Mercury and Venus) uploaded to the old channel last year, there are very concrete ideas for Uranus and Neptune, whilst Mars and Saturn are the only ones where I don't really know what I want to do with them yet, so yeah, I haven't forgotten about that project.
In September I'll be starting a music degree (where and specifically what is yet to be decided), and so that'll take me through to 2021 and hopefully there will be interesting developments during that time - of course I'll be slowing down my work here though. Overall I feel more positive about the future than I have done for almost three years.
Now on the topic of this song right here, naturally there was a bit of salt from me here because it's quite a guitar-driven piece :^) Originally it was an electric and acoustic guitar playing the leading melody, and I was going to try and record an actual acoustic guitar but decided against it on the basis that my recording setup is not microphone-friendly and so I'd likely get better results by trying to make an electric guitar mimic an acoustic - a tone I kinda lost through mixing but I'm happy with how it turned out as a whole all the same.
Since I've been holding off the release for some time, I'm actually almost finished with "The Forgotten God," all I need to do is record the guitar solo, which although I've rewritten it a bit to use actually playable combinations of notes, is still very difficult because I don't want to lose the spirit of the original solo, so I've been practicing the hell out of that. Since there's nothing else to do with that, I've also got an early start on Haze in the works. I'm way further ahead than you all thought I was! :)
