Hey everyone, here's the second of three level themes I wrote for Panophobia, a Doom project based on various fears. The first of these was Indecision, for the decidophobia level.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zCnbwHtT84)
This time, the fear I was targeting was triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number thirteen. The map for this fear is Misfortune's Playground, which I believe was originally designed by Obsidian for a tiny maps community project back in 2012, which he later donated to Panophobia and it has since been modified by dobu. Currently, the playground occupies the MAP26 slot, which would make it the thirteenth fear in the set, so while the map order of Panophobia isn't finalised, I'd be surprised if this one moves.
So, how do I interpret the fear of the number thirteen musically? Well, the simplest way to do this was immediately obvious, and that was to write the piece in a 13/8 time signature, which I've never used before. Generally the subdivision is quite simple so it wasn't too much of a bitch to record this piece though there were a couple of places that tripped me up a few times.
Tonally, the level made me think a lot of the PSX Doom track "Creeping Brutality" (used on Unholy Cathedral et al.), so I threw in a couple of similar elements like the creepy xylophone hits, the howling winds, and the fast diminished arpeggios from the synth. The continuous percussion was a bit of a no-brainer because Playground is a very short map, entirely focused on action. I also wanted a bit of a feeling of uneasiness to seep into the piece at points so the metal pads aren't quite in tune with each other, and there's also the trippy pitch wheel shenanigans towards the end.
I did make some changes - particularly to the end of the piece - from the original MIDI, and then also updated the MIDI to reflect that.. whilst my attention was drawn to this piece, I wrote a new Running Scared theme for the map, I was never really that happy with what I'd done for this one originally...the full Panophobia suite is chronologically the next thing after Devil's Dozen, so that just goes to show why it's better not to released stuff for unfinished projects, heh.
So yeah, the Running Scared themes will wait, there's one more level theme still to come from Panophobia, and it's the one that has recently appeared in the public view as part of Sunder!
