🎮 Serafim S3 Gaming Grip Review: Great Hardware, But There's a Catch...
Today's modern smartphones are absolutely amazing. When you consider their immense processing power and stunning high-resolution screens, they legitimately rival dedicated handheld video game systems. Because of this massive mobile gaming boom, we're seeing so many third-party manufacturers creating custom grips to turn your phone into a true console-like experience and a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 competitor.
Today, we are taking a close look at the Serafim S3 Cloud Gaming Controller. While it isn't the absolute newest device on the market—it actually took home an innovation award at CES 2024—it promises some fantastic features for both Android and iPhone users alike.
HARDWARE & DESIGN FEATURES
Right out of the box, you are instructed to download the Serafim Console app to get things started. Once you have the controller in hand, the build quality is immediately apparent. Overall, it feels pretty great!
The Controls: The D-pad feels solid, and the analog sticks are absolutely fantastic. They are utilizing premium Hall Effect sensors, meaning you don't have to worry about annoying stick drift down the road.
Connectivity: On the bottom edge, you have a much-appreciated 3.5mm headphone jack for zero-latency wired audio, along with a USB-C port for pass-through charging while you play. The internal USB-C connector that plugs into your phone also has some flexibility to it, preventing damage when inserting or removing your device.
Case-Friendly Design: This is a huge win. I love that I can leave my protective case on my phone while using this controller. It is incredibly annoying when grips force you to remove your case every single time you want to play, so I am very glad Serafim accommodated this.
INTERCHANGEABLE GRIPS & ERGONOMICS
One of the most unique selling points of the Serafim S3 is the interchangeable grips. You can easily pop the back grips off and swap between two different sizes to perfectly match your hands.
Thicker Grips: These feature a bit more texture and provide a more substantial hump for a traditional console controller feel.
Thinner Grips: These are perfect for smaller hands or for sliding the controller into a slimmer bag for travel.
GAMEPLAY TEST: SAMSUNG GALAXY S26 ULTRA
To put the S3 through its paces, I snapped my Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra into the controller and booted up the Eden emulator for some Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The button presses feel highly tactile, and the controller is very comfortable for extended play sessions. I did experience minor stuttering and some off-colors during the race, but I want to be perfectly clear: that is completely due to the Eden emulator itself and has absolutely nothing to do with the controller hardware. The Serafim S3 handled the inputs perfectly and performed exactly as it should.
THE MAJOR BUMMER: PLAYSTATION REMOTE PLAY
Now, we have to talk about the elephant in the room. The hardware is great, but the software integration left me incredibly disappointed. When trying to boot up PlayStation Remote Play, I was hit with a paywall. To access the PS Remote Play features natively through their app interface, they require you to pay a $6.99 subscription fee. For a piece of hardware that already costs money upfront, locking an advertised feature behind an extra paywall is a massive letdown. No, I am not going to pay extra for that. It’s a huge bummer to find this out after the fact.
THE FINAL VERDICT
So, what is the final verdict on the Serafim S3? From a pure hardware perspective, it is a very solid device. It is extremely comfortable, the buttons and Hall Effect analog sticks feel premium, and I love that it fits perfectly over my phone case. It works flawlessly for emulators and native mobile games. However, I am severely disappointed by the PlayStation Remote Play paywall. If you don't care about PS Remote Play, this is a fantastic grip. If you do, that $7 fee is definitely something you need to keep in mind.
