I am definitely tired, but I am endlessly grateful for this community and another amazing convention! Tomorrow morning at O-dark-thirty, I am heading straight to the airport to once again travel out west for the incredible Utah Retro Gaming Expo in Layton, UT! This is easily one of my absolute favorite shows of the entire year. Last year at this exact convention, I had an unforgettable time—including crashing a go-kart, whoopse!
If you are attending the show this weekend, make sure you come by and say hello! I will have a dedicated vendor booth on both Friday and Saturday where we will have tons of cool retro gear, custom 3D prints, and gaming accessories on display. Even better, I have the absolute honor of co-MCing a special guest panel with John Riggs! We will be sitting down to talk with Demolition Ax and Smash—the legendary, powerhouse WWF Hall of Fame tag team! You definitely do not want to miss out on that conversation.
With a heavy travel schedule and long flights ahead, I always need plenty of portable entertainment to survive the layovers and time in the air. For this trip, my primary travel companion is my Nintendo Switch, alongside my next-gen gear. But what physical games and accessories am I packing into my carry-on for the flight to Salt Lake City?
First and foremost, a couple of years ago I picked up a fantastic multi-game cartridge storage case directly from Nintendo's official online store. This official "My Nintendo" game case allows me to neatly store a wide variety of different physical cartridges in one compact place, meaning I don't have to lug around a bulky pile of individual plastic game cases in my luggage. And don't worry—I am officially leaving anything related to Rygar far, far behind this time around!
For games to keep me occupied during travel, I am loading up my system with several fantastic titles. Naturally, I am bringing Star Fox, as I want to dive much deeper into the game during my flights. I am also packing Yoshi and the Mysterious Book; what little I have played of it so far, I have absolutely loved! Mario Kart World is another must-have for the bag because I am fully expecting a number of fellow creators and attendees to want to get some multiplayer matches going once we arrive in Layton. Finally, I am bringing Donkey Kong Bonanza. When I attended this exact convention last year, I actually managed to dislocate these two fingers on my hand right before the trip, meaning I had barely touched the game and hadn't gotten very far. I am determined to finally pick it back up and make some real progress this time around!
When you travel with multiple modern devices, power management is everything. I'll have my smartphone, my tablet, and my gaming handhelds with me, so I am packing the AverMedia Elite Go. What makes this device so cool is that it features dual USB-C ports and a standard USB-A port for versatile charging. It also doubles as a convenient travel dock, allowing me to connect my setup directly to a hotel room television via HDMI if I want to kick back and game on a big screen at night.
I am also packing my Nyxi Hyperion 3 controllers. One of the best features of these controllers is the central joiner piece. I can use them attached directly as handheld grips, or slide them together into a standard standalone controller configuration, meaning I can safely leave my bulky Pro Controller at home and save precious suitcase space! Rounding out the tech bag, I am bringing my iPad along with my trusty Raycon earbuds for the flights.
I am super looking forward to catching up with everyone in Utah. If you are in the local area, make sure you swing on by the Davis Conference Center in Layton! We are bringing so much cool stuff to the show for the very first time, including a few extra oversized display items that barely managed to squeeze into the vehicle.
Once we wrap things up in Utah, the convention tour keeps right on rolling—at the end of August, we will be heading over to Merge, the Michigan Retro Gaming Expo!
