For as long as I can possibly remember, I have absolutely loved racing games. My passion for the genre goes all the way back to the classic days of the NES and playing RC Pro-Am. But as gaming technology evolved, one of my favorite video game series of all time quickly became Gran Turismo. Now, the absolute greatest thing about the Gran Turismo franchise is the fact that it is a true, dedicated racing simulator. It always looks graphically stunning, features incredible driving physics, and has a massive roster of officially licensed cars to collect, tune, and customize. The one major bad thing? The franchise is completely trapped on the PlayStation console ecosystem.

If you are a massive fan of the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, you really have not had a whole lot to look forward to as far as realistic, authentic racing simulators go—until right now. So up on the screen above me, this is Assoluto Racing, which the developers and publishers were kind enough to provide an early digital review key for me, completely free of charge, to go ahead and check out for you guys. A huge thank you to the publishers for making that happen!

One of the most impressive features right out of the gate is that you can actually play Assoluto Racing across multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, the brand new Nintendo Switch 2, iOS, and Android devices as well. Best of all? You can actually do full cross-platform racing! There are over 150 officially licensed vehicles in this game, and you can even run hot laps on the legendary Nürburgring!

As we boot the game up, we are going to select a new game and accept the terms of service. The game prompts us to choose our steering style, which you can change later. The options are ZR or the right stick. Interestingly, this actually seems more like a throttle and brake control style, rather than a steering style. We are going to do the right stick for right now because the trigger doesn't seem to read as analog in this setup, but the stick does. You can choose cars from a massive manufacturer list including Acura, ATS, BMW, Chevy, Daihatsu, Dallara, Ford, Honda, Lexus, Lotus, Mazda, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, RUF, Subaru, Super Formula, Suzuki, Toyota, and TVR. The game offers single-player racing, multiplayer lobbies, ranked events, and rotating challenge events like daily challenges.

Jumping into the actual gameplay, I will honestly say the level of visual detail on the track environment is fairly low. At least, it is a lot lower than I would have initially expected for a modern console release. I expected this to kind of look like a PlayStation 4 version of Gran Turismo, and it just doesn't. While the trees and the background scenery look okay, the track itself—the actual pavement texture—does not look great at all. The reflections on the hood of the car don't look great either. Furthermore, there is absolutely no rumble support! That collision should have immediately given me some force feedback or rumble on the controller, and there was absolutely none.

After finishing the race, we got a silver medal with a lap time of 1:57.694. Exiting out of that screen, I really don't like the fact that I can't just hit the B button to easily go back to the previous menu. Instead, I have to manually navigate over to this little caret icon in the top left corner of the screen. That is definitely not a great user interface design choice.

Let's go back into a single-player quick race. Structurally and mechanically, this experience is very similar to Gran Turismo, I would say. So, is Assoluto Racing actually worth 20 bucks? If you absolutely do not have any other simulation racing options on your handheld, I think it is okay. It definitely leaves a few major things out. The visual look of the track surface is definitely one of those elements that desperately could be improved in future updates. Some of the car models look okay, but the complete lack of controller rumble is really, really bizarre for a racing title.

Overall, this seems like a pretty stripped-down racing experience to me, and for a game running on the powerful Nintendo Switch 2, I would really think that it should look significantly better. Let me know exactly what you think of this game down below in the comments!
