This is my MacBook Neo, and I must admit, I absolutely love the hardware design. The build quality is unmatched, and while the software transition takes a minute, I am definitely getting the hang of it.
However, there is one drawback to the brilliant design of the MacBook Neo: it features absolutely no active cooling. There are zero fans inside this beautifully sleek aluminum chassis. Apple designed it to be silent, which is fantastic for quiet environments. But this passive cooling introduces an issue for power users. Because there are no fans to push hot air out, the MacBook suffers from thermal throttling. When you push the processor hard, the chip generates massive heat. Since that heat has nowhere to go, the system automatically slows down the processor to prevent overheating. The hotter your laptop gets, the slower it runs.
So, how do we combat this thermal throttling for less than a five-dollar bill? The solution lies in bridging the air gap between the exceptionally hot processor and the conductive aluminum bottom casing of the laptop. By installing a high-quality thermal compound—specifically, thermal pads—we can effectively turn the entire bottom chassis of the MacBook Neo into one giant heatsink! This modification allows the heat to dissipate much more efficiently from the chip into the aluminum shell. Let us talk about how easy it is to perform this thermal pad mod. You do not need to be an engineer to pull this off. To get inside the chassis, you will need a P5 1.2 millimeter pentalobe screwdriver. For the sake of saving time, I have already removed the screws from the bottom cover. Once the screws are out, the aluminum backplate pops right off with a gentle pull. Look inside, and you will see the processor shield right in the center. The secret weapon is a simple set of thermal pads. The kit I purchased came with perfectly sized pads that have a clear adhesive backing, almost like a double-sided tape.
The installation is straightforward. You simply peel off the plastic from one side of the thermal pad and carefully place it directly over the processor shield. Once the pad is securely in place, you peel off the top layer of backing. Now, when you reinstall the aluminum bottom case, the metal will press firmly against the thermal pad, eliminating the insulating air gap that was trapping all that heat inside your MacBook Neo. I do need to issue a quick warning about this modification, however. Because we are making the system transfer heat efficiently into the bottom chassis, the exterior is going to get noticeably hotter to the touch when resting on your lap.
