A playthrough of Sierra's 1995 graphic adventure for PCs running Windows 3.1 and Dos, Torin's Passage.
This video shows the game running in Dos. I finish it with a perfect score, and I show several of the game's death scenes and Easter eggs over the course of the playthrough.
Torin's Passage is a point-and-click adventure that, at first glance, bears a striking resemblance to King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride. It sports a slick cartoon-style SVGA presentation, and it stars a hapless young royal on a magical journey through a far-off fantastic land.
But for all of the surface similarities, Torin's Passage carries a very different vibe. KQ7 wore its schmaltzy Disney inspiration on its sleeve, while Torin's Passage is more a unhinged, adult-tinged affair loaded with off-color innuendo and bizarre sight gags. I suppose that makes sense when you take into account that it was written and directed by Al Lowe, the guy behind the Leisure Suit Larry series.
The game is a family-friendly affair - it's bright and colorful and full of slapstick hijinks - but it makes a real effort to appeal to the parents sitting with their kids to play it. It regularly winks at the adults in the room in ways that would go straight over most kids' heads... most of the time. Occasionally, it'll drop a bomb that'll draw a whiplash-inducing double-take.
The puzzles are easy but well constructed, the art and music are excellent, the voice acting is a cut above for a 1995 production, and the surreal humor hits its mark more often than not. It doesn't feel as grandiose or ambitious as KQ7, and its parts don't gel quite as well as I'd hoped, but Torin's Passage is a quality game. I wouldn't call it a top-tier Sierra classic, but you could do a whole lot worse for an afternoon's entertainment.

A playthrough of Segas 1987 adventure game for the Sega SG-1000, Lorettas Portrait: Sherlock Holmes (ロレッタの肖像 / Roretta no Shouzou).

Loretta no Shouzou is a point-and-click detective adventure game for the SG-1000, the precursor to the Sega Master System. It was one of the SG-1000s final official releases (followed only by The Black Onyx), and weighing in at one megabit, it was notable for being the largest game ever produced for the console.
You are Sherlock Holmes, and youve been hired to investigate the theft of a painting from a local art gallery. As you poke around nineteenth century London questioning suspects and finding clues, it becomes apparent that the painting is just the tip of the iceberg, and you soon find yourself entangled in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse.
The game plays out like a PC adventure. You click on items to examine them, you interact with people and move between locations through a series of context-sensitive menus, and additional actions and places are made available as you uncover new information. Itll immediately feel familiar to anyone who has played Enixs Portopia no Satsujin Jiken or any of the MacVenture games.
What stuck out to me about Lorettas Portrait was how ambitious it was for an SG-1000 game. The machine wasnt designed to handle much beyond simple early 80s arcade-style shooters and platformers, and yet here we see a fully explorable city, full-screen background images, window overlays, boatloads of text, and a save system. As crude as the graphics and sound are, I cant help but be impressed by what Sega achieved with this cart.
