A playthrough of Tradewest's 1992 racing game for the NES, R.C. Pro-Am II.

When it was released in early 1988, the hit isometric racer R.C. Pro-AM (youtu.be/EA-430ZNqZg) became a multiplayer mainstay that helped usher in the NES mega boom of the late 80s.

Rare revisited the concept a few times in the early 90s. In 1991, a sequel (Super R.C. Pro-Am) hit the Game Boy. An enhanced remake of the first NES game came the next year for the Sega Genesis (Championship R.C. Pro-Am), and the final entry in the series, R.C. Pro-Am II, brought the series back to the NES for one last hurrah at the end of 1992.

The follow-ups never reached the same level of recognition or influence as the original, but they all offered up a solid serving of arcade-style isometric racing action, and R.C. Pro-Am II was arguably the best of them.

It plays like the first game, but everything has been updated. It supports four-player simultaneous play and features a thirty-six race campaign spread across twenty-four tracks (evenly split between standard racing circuits, city streets, and offroad courses), with the final twelve races taking place on harder versions of earlier tracks. You win better vehicles by collecting letters that spell out "RC PRO-AM II", and you can spend your winnings from the races and minigames on parts to upgrade your car's performance and to arm it to the teeth with things like missiles and mines.

The music has been nicely updated, the screen scrolls at a fast and (usually) smooth clip, and there's a good amount of detail and variety to visuals. It has all the upgrades you'd expect to come with a 4x increase in ROM size. The gameplay feels better, too. The steering is less twitchy, the tracks are more intuitively laid out, you can now get a free boost off the starting line with a well-timed button press, and the pace at which the AI racers improve is better balanced.

R.C. Pro-Am II is a refinement of everything people loved about the first game, and I think that's exactly what people would've wanted from it in 1992. Lack of novelty notwithstanding, it's an excellent NES racing cart.
