Handheld gaming was absolutely stacked by 1999, and SNK threw their hat in the ring with the Neo Geo Pocket and its follow up, the Neo Geo Pocket Color. The original monochrome version never got an official release in North America, so if you wanted one over here you actually had to mail order it directly through SNK, and there was even an eighteen and older requirement just to place that order. The Color model launched properly in the US that August exclusively through eToys.com for 69.95 dollars, and SNK went all in by spending 4 million dollars on TV ads running on MTV, Comedy Central, and Cartoon Network for the holiday season that year. One of the coolest features was the ability to connect certain games to the Sega Dreamcast using a special cable, letting titles like SNK vs Capcom Match of the Millennium link up with their Dreamcast counterparts. Despite going up against the Game Boy Color, SNK actually managed to turn a small profit in the US thanks to a loyal fighting game crowd who loved that clicky joystick.
