Halo Combat Evolved almost did not look anything like the game everyone remembers. Developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios, it released November 15, 2001 as a launch title for the original Xbox, but development actually started back in 1997 as a completely different project, beginning life as a real time strategy game before morphing into a third person shooter and only becoming a first person shooter in the final stretch.
Bungie was in genuinely rough financial shape right before this all came together. A bug in their previous game Myth 2 wiped out installation folders on launch, forcing a costly recall of 200,000 already produced copies, and the company had to sell off a stake just to stay afloat. That instability is exactly what led Bungie to reach out to Microsoft about an acquisition, which happened in June 2000, giving the team roughly fourteen months to finish Halo before the Xbox itself launched.
Even the title was not entirely Bungie's choice. The team wanted to simply call the game Halo, but Microsoft's marketing side added Combat Evolved as a subtitle to make it sound more competitive against other military shooters, a decision Bungie reportedly was not thrilled about, which is why the main menu and the side of the actual box still just say Halo on their own. Master Chief's name came from a much more grounded place too, since Bungie decided to refer to him by his real military rank instead of inventing something flashier.
The payoff for all of that chaos turned out to be massive. Halo ended up selling alongside roughly half of every Xbox sold, crossed 6 million copies worldwide by 2005, and picked up more than forty awards including several Game of the Year honors, cementing it as the killer app that genuinely made the entire Xbox brand.
