Buy specially marked boxes of Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, Honeycomb, Raisin Bran or Golden Crisp, cut out the coupon, mail it in, and you got five dollars off selected Game Gear games. The games you could get money off were pure Saturday morning kid catalog too. VR Troopers, Jungle Strike, Star Wars Return of the Jedi, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. All the big licenses aimed right at kids who were already staring at the back of the cereal box every single morning. And of course it had the classic fine print. See marked boxes for details, limit one per household or address. You filled it out by hand, mailed it off with your receipt, and then forgot about it for eight weeks until it randomly showed up.
Cereal boxes were a serious marketing battleground back then. And Sega had real history in the breakfast aisle. In 1994 they hooked up with Cheerios for a big Sonic and Genesis promotion, and there was even a Sonic cereal planned that never made it to shelves.
