Iron Soldier was one of the games Atari actually trusted to back up its biggest marketing claim, and that claim was stamped right onto the box. Released for the Atari Jaguar in December 1994, developed by Eclipse Software Design, it put you inside a stolen 42 foot tall mech, fighting to bring down a military dictatorship called the Iron Fist Corporation across a series of city missions. One of your weapons is an actual chainsaw, sized to match.

The idea traces back to a very specific pitch. Atari approached Eclipse about making Jaguar games, and lead designer Marc Rosocha ended up meeting producer Sean Patten, who suggested a mech game built around a script he had written out of his own fascination with mechs and Godzilla. Rosocha said yes on one condition, that they got to blow everything up. Patten's personal interest in modern ground combat shaped the weapons, enemies, and urban combat feel that ended up defining the whole game. Production started in 1993.

It earned its spot on that box. Critics generally responded well to it, praising the polygonal visuals, the sound, and destructible environments, with the main complaints landing on the controls and a lack of texture mapping. Collectors and reviewers today still list it alongside Alien vs Predator and Tempest 2000 as part of the Jaguar's must have trinity, and it remains one of the few Jaguar games modern emulation still struggles to run accurately, so real hardware is genuinely your best way to experience it.

Which brings us back to that 64 bit stamp on the box. Atari's whole Do The Math campaign hinged on the Jaguar's claimed bit count beating the 16 bit SNES and Genesis, and Iron Soldier was one of the titles chosen to prove it. The catch is that the Jaguar's actual CPU, a Motorola 68000, was only 32 bit. The 64 came from two extra coprocessors nicknamed Tom and Jerry working alongside it. Iron Soldier genuinely did push the hardware in ways few other Jaguar games managed, which may be exactly why Atari picked it to carry that number.
