The game landed in March 1994 as the third Metroid and a direct follow up to the Game Boy one. Samus Aran heads back to planet Zebes after Ridley steals the last Metroid, and you drop into one massive interconnected world where every new ability opens up somewhere you could not reach before. That design, explore, get a power, go back and unlock the map, is the blueprint the entire Metroidvania genre is built on. It shared a 24 megabit cartridge, one of the biggest SNES games of its day, and even included an in game map, which was a real luxury in 1994.
The two bosses in this footage are franchise legends. The giant green one is Kraid, blown up to several times the size he was in the original. The skeletal creature over the lava is Crocomire, and that fight is unforgettable because you do not just kill him, you push him backwards step by step into a lava pit until his flesh melts clean off and only the skeleton is left.
Reviews came back as straight 9s and 10s, the only complaint being that the map made getting around too easy. Decades later it still shows up near the top of almost every greatest games of all time list. Not bad for a game that sold itself by insulting you.
