Sony is ending physical disc production in 2028 and going all-digital, and yesterday's massive PlayStation Network outage was a perfect, unfortunate example of exactly why that future is looking bleak. This video breaks it down.

On July 24th, PSN went down globally for over six hours, leaving thousands of players across the US, UK and beyond unable to sign in, play online or access the PlayStation Store. Crucially, many players found they couldn't even launch games they had bought, downloaded and supposedly owned, because without a connection to Sony's authorisation servers, a digital library means nothing. In a world where physical discs no longer exist, an outage like this does not just take away online play, it can take away access to everything.
What makes it worse is that this was not a one off. Independent monitoring has documented this as roughly the sixth PSN outage in under four months, with Sony staying silent on most of them and offering no root cause or compensation, all while PlayStation Plus prices went up earlier this year. That is the reality of the all-digital future being built here, total dependence on infrastructure that has repeatedly proven unreliable, with no physical fallback when it fails.
Losing physical media was always about more than the discs. It is about what you actually own, and the growing list of ways a digital-only library can be taken away, whether through delistings, expiring licences, or an outage like the one we just witnessed. None of this is anti-PlayStation for the sake of it, it is disappointment at a direction that trades away consumer ownership for corporate convenience.
