Pokemon gets slaughtered for its frame rate, and a lot of that criticism is deserved. But Palworld has measurable performance problems too, on far more powerful hardware, and somehow it gets a complete pass. This time I can prove the double standard with numbers, because I tested it myself.
Palworld tested on Xbox Series X using my own frame rate analysis tool.
The video opens with how savage the reaction to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's launch performance was, from the brutal headlines to Digital Foundry concluding the games should not be sold in that state. Then it moves to my own Palworld testing across four areas on Xbox Series X. The Windswept Hills, the game's starting area, was the worst performer, averaging around 37fps with drops to 32 and never reaching 60. The Astral Mountains averaged around 45fps, the Desiccated Desert around 55fps, and Mount Obsidian was the best at just under 59fps. Across all four areas Palworld averaged just under 49fps with a 1% low of around 33, on a current generation console.
The tool measures real framerate by detecting duplicate frames to calculate true FPS, alongside per frame frametime data and 1% lows that reveal the inconsistencies average figures hide. These are measured, objective numbers, not vibes.
The video also tackles the Early Access excuse, and why it falls apart completely when you consider that Game Freak actually fixed Scarlet and Violet's performance on the original Switch hardware through patches, while Palworld's issues have persisted from Early Access all the way through to the full 1.0 release. Criticise Pokemon's performance, it often deserves it, but hold everyone to the same standard. Let me know in the comments if you think there's a good reason Palworld should get a pass.
