In 2017, an international team of astronomers discovered the smallest star nearly 600 light-years away from the Earth in the constellation Pictor. It was an ultra-cool M-type red dwarf star named ‘EBLM J0555-57Ab’. It is 85 times heavier than Jupiter but has a size slightly smaller than Saturn, that’s so small that it barely functions as a star.
EBLM J0555-57Ab is part of a triple star system that consists of two sun-like stars. Being the smallest star in the system, it orbit its primary stars with a period of 7.8 days.
Though EBLM J0555-57Ab is incredibly small, it still has enough mass for hydrogen fusion, the power source of stars like the Sun. If the star were much smaller, then there wouldn’t be enough pressure in its center for the process to occur, and it would instead have formed as a brown dwarf (a failed star), rather than a true star.
