About 18,700 years ago, a massive star exploded approximately 17,000 light-years from the Earth in the constellation, Circinus. The resulting supernova blasted off the outermost layer of the star’s gases and gave rise to a pulsar, named as ‘PSR B1509-58’, or ‘B1509’ for short.
It has a diameter of about 20 Km and is a rapidly spinning neutron star that spins about "7 times per second". B1509 is spewing energy out into the space around it to create complex and intriguing structures, including one that resembles a large cosmic hand, called ‘Pulsar Wind Nebula’, nicknamed as the "Hand of God”.
It spans about 150 light years. The red cloud at the end of the finger region is a different structure, called RCW 89.
One of the big mysteries of this object is whether the pulsar particles are interacting with the material in a specific way to make it look like a hand, or if the material is in fact shaped like a hand.
