In March 2019, astronomers have discovered a new Planetary System that is somewhat similar to our Solar System. The new planetary system consists of 4 exoplanets and a main sequence star, named as ‘L 98-59’. L 98-59 is a bright M-type dwarf star, located at about 34.6 light years away from the earth, in the constellation of Volans.
Astronomers have confirmed four terrestrial-sized exoplanets orbiting L98-59. The two innermost planets, named as L 98-59b and L 98-59c, as well as one outer planet named as L 98-59e are possibly hot rocky worlds, having mass and size comparable to Venus, Earth and mars. While L 98-59d, could be a water world having large amounts of water, potentially as much as 30% of its entire mass, it may therefore have an ocean covering much of its surface.
In August 2021, scientists announced new evidence for a fifth, potentially habitable planet, labeled as L 98-59f. Though still unconfirmed, this planet is believed to have 2.46 times Earth's mass, and an orbital period of 23.15 days.
