Asteroid Bennu was discovered on 11 September 1999 by Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research. Its diameter is 500 meters and mass 78 billion kilograms.

According to astronomers, there is 1 in 2700 chance of Bennu hitting Earth from 2175 to 2199.

To learn more about this Asteroid, NASA launched OSIRIS-REx in 2016. After traveling for 2 years and 200 million kilometres, OSIRIS-REx finally reached Bennu’s orbit on 3 December 2018 and started orbiting around it.

In August 2019, it finished Bennu’s surface mapping and selected four potential sites. In December 2019, NASA selected Nightingale as the landing spot and started the preparation for landing.

On 20th October 2020, OSIRIS-REx has landed on the surface of Bennu and has collected a sample from the chosen site. Now, Bennu will begin its journey back to Earth and return with the sample on 24 Sep 2023.
