Betelgeuse is an M-type red supergiant star located 650 light-years away from the Earth in the constellation Orion. Betelgeuse is 126,000 times more luminous than our sun making it the 10th brightest star in the night sky and the 2nd brightest star in the Orion constellation, after Rigel.
Betelgeuse is 880 times bigger and 18 times heavier than our sun. It is roughly 10 Million years old much much younger than our Sun which 4.6 billion years old.
In December 2019, astronomers noticed that Betelgeuse is dimming. To understand what was exactly happening astronomers took high-resolution images that showed Betelgeuse is going through some changes. It is slowly fading and changing its shape instead of round, it appears oval shaped.
Some Astronomers suggests that Betelgeuse has already exploded in the past but since it is 650 light-years away from us light will take 650 years to reach Earth. When its light will reach us in the future it will shine brighter than the full moon.
