Kalpana Chawla was born on March 17, 1962, in India. As a child she loved drawing pictures of rockets & see the stars at night. In 1995, at the age of 33 she began working at NASA.
In November 1997, her biggest dream came true when she was selected for conducting experiments in space along with 5 other crew members. It was her first mission in space and after completing the mission, the crew successfully came back to earth.
Her second space flight, Columbia flight STS-107 was launched on Jan 16, 2003. But during the take off a piece of foam insulation broke off as a result on February 1, 2003 when the space shuttle was re-entering in the earth’s atmosphere hot gases penetrated through that broken foam & destroyed the shuttle. All 7 on board astronauts died in the incident. The incident was later given a name called Columbia space shuttle disaster.
