Presented in 4K - The LNER Flying Scotsman, 60103, is known as the most "famous locomotive in the world." This year, it's also celebrating a 100 year anniversary, billed as the "Flying Scotsman centenary programme." To celebrate, the National Railway Museum has been running the Flying Scotsman on excursions around the UK throughout the year. On Sunday September 10th, 2023, the Flying Scotsman ran the "Waverley" excursion, between York and Carlisle on the famous Settle and Carlisle line. Having never seen British steam action, I jumped at the opportunity to see such a historic event.
We start at the Church Fenton station, along the Cross Country route. LNER 60103 flies by the station, with a very enthusiastic and large crowd watching on the platforms. Also included are various Northern, LNER, and TransPennine local trains. After passing Church Fenton, I raced over to Settle station, located on the famous Settle and Carlisle line. Perched on the footbridge, provides us with a great look at the Class A3 locomotive starting its climb up hill.
In addition to the Flying Scotsman, I also caught another steam locomotive on the Settle Carlisle Line, the SR Merchant Navy Class 35018, also known as the British India Line. This 4-6-2 locomotive was built in 1945, and served both Southern Railway and British Railways. This particular excursion was "The Cumbrian Fells Steam Express" running to and from Carnforth via the Settle and Carlisle line.
I look forward to returning to the UK soon, searching for even more steam excursons!
