Poet, Kim Stafford shares life stories about his father, William Stafford who wrote over 22,000 poems during his life. William Stafford was appointed the Poet Laureate for the State of Oregon by Governor Tom McCall in 1975. He served as the Poetry Consultant for the Library of Congress in 1971-72, and to the Church of the Brethren he was a 'treasure.' He was born on January 17, 1914 in Hutchinson, Kansas and was a member of the Church of the Brethren. During World War II, William Stafford served as a conscientious objector in Civilian Public Service where he served three years maintaining roads, building trails, restoring eroded lands and fighting forest fires.
After the war he taught high school and worked as secretary to the director of Church World Service and completed his master's degree at the University of Kansas.
His thesis for his master's degree concerned his war experience as a conscientious objector.
In 1948, William Stafford taught at Lewis and Clark College before moving to North Manchester, Indiana where he served on the faculty at Manchester College in the English Department. He later returned to Lewis & Clark where he taught until his retirement.
William Stafford died in August 1993 having authored over 60 volumes of poems. His son, Kim Stafford has continued to assist his father's publishing efforts. Many poems are still to be published. Kim Stafford shares experiences with host, Brent Carlson, in this edition of "Brethren Voices."
