There were 18 Brethren Workcamps in 2016, which included junior high, senior high, inter-generational, young adult, and "We Are Able."
For 28 years (since 1988), summer workcamps have been held. Originally begun by The Youth and Young Adult Office of the Church of the Brethren, led by Chris Douglas, workcamps are now based in the Brethren Volunteer Service Office.
Brethren Workcamps are held at several sites across the country with a few international locations.
Brethren Workcamps exemplify the Brethren philosophy of service to others, of simple living and often cross the line to extreme simple living. Along with simple living, essential positive attitudes, flexibility, and openness to new experiences are essential for every workcamp.
Those who have the best time at workcamps are those who can most successfully adapt to their surroundings. Although the projects and living conditions are different for each workcamp, they all share some basic universals.
Eating (simply), sleeping (often on the floor), showering (at least once!), working hard, playing, and having fun can be expected!
Participants also have a chance to meet lots of people from all over the country (and sometimes out of it) and make new friendships that last much longer than just one week.
All the details for the individual workcamps will be provided in letters from directors and coordinators in the spring.
The theme will be announced in September, the next schedule of workcamps in October, and registration will begin early in January of 2017. Check out workcamps at brethren.org/workcamps for more information or contact Emily Tyler at from the website.
