The Headquarters of the United Nations is located about 9 miles away from the Brooklyn First Church of the Brethren. For the special guest of "Brethren Voices," it's a trip that Doris Abdullah has made many times, serving as the Church of the Brethren Representative to the United Nations.
Many Brethren may not know that the Church of the Brethren had involvement in the United Nations and it all began over 70 years ago, shortly after the establishment of the United Nations, in 1945.
The January 2009 edition of "Brethren Voices" featured Peggy Reiff Miller and the Seagoing Cowboys of the Church of the Brethren's Heifer Project. This "project," sent livestock shipments to Europe following World War ll. It was a huge undertaking and a coordinated effort of the Brethren Service Committee and the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.
Shortly after the war ended, in 1945, ships began transporting hundreds-of-thousands of livestock to repopulate devastated farms of Europe. During two years, 73 ships were used to transport all types of livestock to devastated Europe. Seven-thousand Seagoing Cowboys accompanied and cared for the livestock on these ships. With this involvement, the Church of the Brethren was ratified as a member of the United Nations, by all 51 nations.
