The current @officialhornby ‘s stunning model of Stanier's masterpiece is definitely one of my firm favourites. With such a good model, the power and grace of the Duchess is easily captured on film, and it also provides a fantastic base for a unique & customised model steam locomotive.
This particular example was visiting the Neville Grove workshop for some medium weathering and plenty of polish to replicate a period photo of a class member on shed at Willesden in the 1960's. The photo was customer supplied, and this is something I welcome as part of my service - should you require a specific look or weathering effect.
The proud owner of this beauty also wanted to recreate the doyen of the class - 46220 Coronation. The model was therefore renamed and renumbered from City of Birmingham to create a truly bespoke model locomotive that accentuates the accuracy and wealth of detail packed into this masterpiece of modelling by Hornby.
This video has been edited to include archive sound of real Duchess’ charging up the famous bank towards Shap Summit. Originally released on vinyl by Argo Transacord, the recordings were made by Peter Handford in the late 1950's, but are now available digitally remastered and on CD via Old Thundridge Records.
