An experienced traveller, Saint-Saëns drew inspiration from his journeys to East Asia, particularly China, and these exotic impressions come vividly to the surface in Triptyque Op. 136—an “almost sonata” and the final major work he wrote for violin and piano. Its three movements, Prémice, Vision congolaise, and Joyeuseté, reflect a fascination with distant cultures that was widely shared in France at the time.
The earlier works in this program—the two violin sonatas and the Berceuse—reveal a composer far more inventive than the label of conservatism might suggest.
