Born in 1743 in Lucca, Italy, Boccherini was not only a highly accomplished composer but also an exceptional cellist. His intimate knowledge of the instrument allowed him to write music that takes full advantage of the cello’s lyrical, singing qualities as well as its technical possibilities.
Boccherini spent much of his career outside Italy, including important periods in Vienna, Paris, and Spain, where he became closely associated with the Spanish court.
