A journey through the Classical and early Romantic clarinet trio tradition, featuring chamber works by Ludwig van Beethoven and his student Ferdinand Ries.
Beethoven’s Trio in B-Flat Major, Op. 11 — sometimes called the “Gassenhauer Trio” — combines sparkling virtuosity with lyrical elegance, ending in a set of variations on a popular opera melody of the time. The later Trio in E-Flat Major, Op. 38 expands the form into a larger, symphonic-style chamber work full of dramatic contrasts, expressive slow movements and energetic finales.
Ferdinand Ries, a close friend and pupil of Beethoven, continued this musical tradition into the early Romantic era. His Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Fortepiano, Op. 28 blends Beethovenian structure with a more intimate and melodic character, moving from lively brilliance to deeply lyrical passages and a graceful closing rondo.
Performed on historical instruments, these works reveal the transparent textures and warm colors of early 19th-century chamber music through the clarinet’s soft vocal tone, the cello’s expressive depth, and the delicate resonance of the fortepiano.
Together, these trios capture the elegance, wit and emotional richness of Viennese chamber music at the turning point between the Classical and Romantic periods.
Enjoy!
