The Fourth Crusade was launched as a holy war to reclaim Jerusalem, yet it ended in a war against fellow Christians. In 1202, thousands of knights set out for the Holy Land, but their crushing debt to Venice and its blind doge, Enrico Dandolo, changed everything. First the crusaders stormed the Christian city of Zara, then they were drawn into a Byzantine struggle for the throne, and in April 1204 they besieged and sacked Constantinople itself, the greatest city in the Christian world. An army sworn to defend the faith destroyed the capital that had shielded Europe for a thousand years.
The consequences reshaped the balance of power for centuries. The Byzantine Empire shattered into rival states, and although the Greeks eventually retook their capital, they never recovered their former strength. The schism between the Catholic West and the Orthodox East became permanent. Venice rose into the dominant trading power of the Mediterranean, securing a monopoly over the waters of the former empire. And a weakened Byzantium could no longer hold back the Turks in Asia Minor, where within two decades the Kayı tribe appeared, the people who would found the Ottoman Empire. A holy war declared against unbelievers buried a Christian empire and opened the door to the conquerors who would one day threaten Europe itself.
