Prussia is the story of how wars can forge a new kind of state—built around discipline, a hardened bureaucracy, and power politics shaped by the balance of Europe. From the Silesian Wars and the Seven Years’ War to the 1806 disaster at Jena–Auerstedt, Prussia moved from rapid rise to humiliating collapse under Napoleon, losing territory, resources, and its aura of military invincibility.
Defeat, however, triggered reinvention: reforms that reshaped society and government, and a modern army rebuilt by Scharnhorst and Gneisenau with reserves and promotion by merit. In 1813–1815 Prussia returned as a different power—fighting through Leipzig and into the final act at Waterloo. After the Congress of Vienna, the Rhineland made Prussia a central player in Europe and set the stage for the “German Question” and the coming rivalry with Austria over uniting Germany.
