Scotland was a medieval nation that England tried to conquer and destroy. It seized her symbols, deposed her kings - but the people withstood the most powerful empire in Britain. In 1286, the death of King Alexander III left Scotland without an heir. English King Edward I seized the moment: he appointed a puppet ruler, took the Stone of Destiny to London, and turned an independent kingdom into a vassal state. The Scottish nobility was divided - the Bruce and Comyn clans fought each other while the enemy stood at the door. Then William Wallace appeared - and proved that disciplined infantry could stop the finest knight cavalry in Europe. His execution in 1305 was meant to terrify. Instead, it turned a man into an idea that could not be killed.
Robert I the Bruce finished what Wallace began. The victory at Bannockburn in 1314 stopped an army of 20,000 English with just 8,000 Scots. The Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 proclaimed that the authority of the king comes from the people. In 1328, England officially recognized Scottish independence. The Stone of Destiny sat in Westminster for over 600 years - and was returned only in 1996.
