The Goths entered the Roman Empire in 376 not as conquerors, but as refugees fleeing the Huns. Rome allowed them to cross the Danube, yet instead of integration they faced hunger, corruption, and abuse. What was meant to be a controlled settlement quickly turned into a war the empire could no longer manage. The turning point came in 378 at the Battle of Adrianople, where a Roman army was destroyed and Emperor Valens was killed - a moment that revealed the empire’s weakening grip on its borders.

In the decades that followed, the Goths emerged as an independent force operating on equal terms with Rome. They moved through the Balkans, invaded Italy, and in 410 sacked Rome, striking at the symbolic center of the ancient world. But the true significance of this conflict lies in its consequences: it changed Europe by breaking the old balance of power and opening the way for a new era. The Visigoths established their own kingdom in Gaul and later in Spain, blending Roman traditions with new political structures. This transformation marked the beginning of medieval Europe and the end of the Roman world as it had existed for centuries.
