The 15th century was a turning point for Iberia. After the first victories of Castile over Granada (La Higueruela, 1431) and the recapture of Gibraltar (1462), the marriage of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon (1469) set the path toward unification. The War of the Castilian Succession (1475–1479) included the siege of Burgos and the Battle of Toro, while the Treaty of Alcáçovas confirmed the triumph of the “Catholic Monarchs” and secured an alliance with Portugal.
The ten-year Granada War (1482–1492) became the decisive stage of the Reconquista. From the night assault on Alhama to the protracted siege of Baza, from the fall of Málaga to the capitulation of Granada — Isabella and Ferdinand step by step broke the resistance of the emirate. The year 1492 entered history with multiple events: the Alhambra Decree expelled the Jews, the Inquisition strengthened the church’s authority, and Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. The final touch came with the annexation of Navarre (1512–1515), after which a unified Spain emerged on the map of Europe.
