The Gothic War began as Byzantium's attempt to return Italy to the Roman Empire, and it ended by destroying the very country it set out to save. Emperor Justinian I believed he would restore the glory of Rome: whoever ruled Italy earned the right to call himself heir to the Caesars. But the peninsula had lived on its own terms for half a century under the Ostrogoths, who preserved Roman law, cities, and culture. When Belisarius and his army landed in Sicily in 535, no one imagined the struggle would stretch across twenty years and turn a flourishing land into a wasteland.
The victory over the Ostrogoths at Taginae and Mons Lactarius in 552-554 came at a price Byzantium could not afford. Justinian reclaimed ruins: Italy's economy lay shattered, and the ancient world that had survived the fall of the Western Roman Empire finally died out here. When the Lombards arrived on the exhausted peninsula fifteen years later, they met almost no resistance. The Gothic War showed how an obsession with past greatness can destroy what remains of it, and it drew the line between antiquity and the Middle Ages in Italy.
