Behind those “cute” clips is a trade built on suffering.

Poachers snatch slow lorises from the wild, often entire families at once. Their teeth are cut out with pliers or nail clippers so they can’t bite. The pain is unimaginable. Many bleed to death or die from infection long before they are sold.

This is the true cost of “cute.”

But together, we are fighting back. Indonesian authorities, led by the Ministry of Forestry, have rescued more than 1,300 slow lorises from the illegal pet trade. Our partners, YIARI, support this work through a holistic approach that combines medical care, rehabilitation, release, law enforcement support, education, and awareness.

Change is happening. Fewer lorises are now found with their teeth cut, falling from around 20 each year to just two. And the number of illegal pet markets, both online and offline, is steadily shrinking.

Every rescue, every release, every life saved is proof that compassion works.

He was only two years old - a helpless baby orangutan found alone, terrified, and trapped in a tiny cage in an illegal gold mining area in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. His name is Randy. When a joint team from the BKSDA West Kalimantan and our partners YIARI reached him, they found him living in heartbreaking conditions. The miner who kept him had built a crude cage barely big enough for Randy to turn around. He was being fed scraps of banana and bread, his small body weak and undernourished. Beneath his soft fur, our partners discovered signs of an old fracture - a healed break on his leg, proof that Randy had suffered a serious traumatic incident before his rescue. Randy’s story is the tragic result of human activity pushing deeper into orangutan habitat. As forests are destroyed and land is cleared for illegal mining, orangutans lose their homes - and their safety. When a baby is found alone, it almost always means his mother is gone, caught in the crossfire of habitat loss and human conflict. Randy is now at YIARIs rehabilitation center, but this is only the very beginning for him. His recovery will be long, difficult, and incredibly costly. He’s receiving the basic medical care and nutrition he was denied for so long but learning how to be an orangutan again will take years of patient, specialized support.
